Home-builders told to clean up their act
Property owners and home-builders whose debris clutters Calgary's drainage systems could soon have to clean up their acts or pay through the nose. Calgarians who fail to corral dirt, sand or other materials washed by heavy rains from their property into storm sewers and polluting rivers should pick up the cost of cleanup by city crews, a municipal committee recomended yesterday. Currently, all that exists is a $30.00 fine for vehicles tracking earth onto streets. "What we're dealing with is a Band-Aid treatment- we really have nothing now," said city bylaw cheif Bill Bruce, adding cleanup costs could range into the thousands of dollars depending on the size of the mess. The regulations would focus on construction sites where large amounts of unsecured earth are often washed away. But some aldermen feared the bylaw could be casting too wide a net, ensnaring homeowners guilty of minor infractions. -Bill Kaufmann, Calgary Sun
